IT strategic planning is intended to help organizations set their information technology direction in a manner that supports the overall agency strategic plan: Legacy system rationalization, Infrastruction management and consolidation, Data management & information sharing and IT security.

IT Strategic planning is concerned with: Architectures which are developed to portray the evolution of an IT environment over various points in time, beginning with the baseline or current situation. The architecture envisioned and business requirements in the "Objective Architecture" show the progression of architecture from baseline to objective. 

An enterprise Information System Architecture is described according to the DoD Architecture FrameWork in terms of three architectural views: Operational View ''OV'', Systems & Services View ''SV'' Technical Standards View "TV" and The All-View ''AV''.
